Evelyn E. Hinch

September 25, 1915 — May 14, 2010

Evelyn E. Hinch, 94, of Bowerston, O., passed away peacefully on Friday, May 14, 2010 at Union Hospital in Dover, O.

Born September 25, 1915 in Conotton, O., she was a daughter of the late Emerson and Nancy (Conaway) Swinehart. She was a lifelong resident of the Bowerston area and was the longest member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Evelyn graduated Valedictorian from Scio High School in the class of 1933 and graduated from Bliss Business College in Columbus in 1938.

Evelyn was a volunteer at the Dennison Canteen during WWII and also a Medical Secretary in a general hospital in Vancouver, Washington during the war. She then worked as a secretary for the State Highway Department in Columbus. In the late 1950’s Evelyn learned to fly and later owned her own plane, a Cessna 150. She had enough flying hours to have traveled around the world twice. In the late 1960’s Evelyn built, owned, and was the Administrator of Sunnyslope Nursing Home in Bowerston and served in that capacity until retirement in 1985.

On April 14, 1991, Evelyn married Eddie L. Hinch who preceded her in death on March 7, 2002. In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucy Swinehart and Zoe Swinehart Markley, and a brother, Bert Swinehart.

Her surviving family includes her sister-in-law Marilyn Rogers, niece Barbara Evans and nephews, Roger, Eddie and Gary Swinehart. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Emily Farley, Matt Hinch and Adam Hinch.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, bowling and going to the beach. She was also a devoted and loving owner of many Dalmatians. The person who influenced Evelyn the most was her father. Much like herself, he was a solid and dependable Christian that always encouraged her family to have faith in God and to never give up.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 19, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. A graveside service, officiated by Rev. Tom Dawson, will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Island Creek Cemetery at Toronto, O.

Those wishing to honor Evelyn’s memory are encouraged to do so by a charitable contribution to Bowerston’s Trinity United Methodist Church, their local humane society, or Hounds’ Haven, in lieu of flowers.
