Eleanor V. Malterer

Eleanor Varie Malterer, 94, of Dennison, passed away at her home on Sunday, July 5, 2020, after a period of declining health. Born September 18, 1925 in Uhrichsville, she was the eldest of 13 siblings born to the late Alva Edgar Greenwood, Sr. and Chestina Elizabeth (Lauver) Greenwood. A local resident for much of her life, Eleanor had also resided in the Inverness, Florida area from 2001 to 2016.

On January 26, 1942, Eleanor married Gene W. Malterer with whom she enjoyed over 61 years of marriage until his passing on April 10, 2003. They are survived by a daughter, Barbara J. Garner, with whom she had resided; son, Warren “Ren” (Tammy) Malterer of Florida; grandchildren, Teresa, Gail, Bobbi, Craig, Kylie, Troy, and Amanda; great-grandchildren, Tucker, Dakota, Chaska, Nakaza, Ashley, Brittany, Josh, Zak, Nikki, Lauren, Lindsay, Abby, Hannah, Seth, Jordan, Cruz, Michaela, Abagail, Bristol, Jaelyn, and Pyper; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Eleanor is also survived by her brothers, Larry (Marge) Greenwood and Donald (Shirley) Greenwood; sisters, Winifred Gibbens, Melva Jane (Austin) Beckley, and Linda Kay Froman; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Dale Richard Malterer; grandson, Michael Malterer; son-in-law, Richard Garner; brothers, Frank Benjamin, Jackie Lee, Dale Richard, Alva Jr., Earl, and Lewis "Butch” Greenwood; and sister, Mary Lou Shaw.

Eleanor was a graduate of the Cambridge School of Cosmetology who earned her instructor and manager licenses. She taught cosmetology at Twin City Beauty College for a number of years, and had also been employed by Alsco, The Medicine Shoppe in New Philadelphia, and Older Brothers in Dennison. She was an avid bowler in her younger years. Eleanor had most recently attended Park Christian Church in Dennison, having previously been a member at Uhrichsville First Christian Church.

According to Eleanor’s wishes, cremation is planned without a visitation. A public graveside service, officiated by Pastor Scot Caley, will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 11, in Bowerston’s Longview Cemetery where she will be interred beside her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice.
