Edith Lorena Shock Markley, 90, of New Philadelphia, formerly of Uhrichsville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 24, 2008. Born July 13, 1918 in Braxton Co., WV, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Earl Sumpter and Locy Virginia (Burk) Sumpter.
Edith was a longtime and faithful member of The Christian Temple at Uhrichsville. Prior to her retirement, Edith had been a home health care provider for many years as well as being an Amway distributor. She was best known as “The Candy Lady”.
Edith’s surviving family include: a daughter, Susan (Rich) Brouhard of St. Joseph, MO; a son, Richard (Sharon) Shock Powder Springs, GA; 4 step-children, Charles and David (Sissy) Markley of Uhrichsville, Ronald Markley of Mansfield, and Mrs. Dale (Philda) Carrothers of Scio; 6 grandchildren, Michael Shock, Darin Shock, Steven Shock, Michelle Baldwin, Angela McComas, and Travis Joiner; 3 step-grandchildren, Jana Foster of Flowery Branch, GA., J. Keith Arnett of Dacula, GA, and Christian Swanson of Mableton, GA., 9 great grandchildren, Courtney, Drew, Victoria, Alexandra, Sammi, Hannah, Isaac, Erica, and Jesse; 3 great grandchildren, Kim, Holly, and J.P. and 1 great-great granddaughter, Lindsay Amore of Newcomerstown, OH., and several step-grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her first husband Newlon Shock who passed away in 1982; her second husband, Charles E. “Pat” Markley who passed away in 1993; 3 brothers, Woodford, Clarence, and Brennice Sumpter, 4 sisters, Bonnie Sumpter, Lovenna Berry, Emogene Smyers, and Rena Burk.
A celebration of Edith’s life, officiated by Pastors Larry and Janie Hostetler, will be held at 1:00pm Monday, October 27, 2008 at The Christian Temple, 4249 Belden Dr., Uhrichsville, OH 44683, and internment will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover. Family and friends may call at visitation on Sunday, October 26, 2008 from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm in the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison.
Those wishing to honor Edith may make a memorial donation to The Christian Temple Building Fund.
