Edgar Dale Spencer, 80, of Gnadenhutten, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020, at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, after a brief illness. Born October 21, 1940 in Gnadenhutten, he was a son of the late Earnest and Nellie Allean (Jones) Spencer.
Dale was a lifelong Gnadenhutten resident and 1958 graduate of Gnadenhutten High School. Despite being blinded in an accident in 1972, he never gave up – continuing to be active in his community, especially enjoying woodworking and craft projects for family and friends. Along with his wife, he was honored by the Community Service Award from Gnadenhutten in 1989 and the Zeisberger Heckewelder Award from the Tuscarawas County Historical Society in 1990.
On January 20, 1974, Dale wed the former Sandra Jean Thompson with whom he enjoyed 37 years of loving marriage until her passing on January 20, 2011. They are survived by a son, Thomas Dale (Lori) Spencer; daughter, Lisa (Brian) Cardani; stepson, Kevin (Becky) Parr; 6 grandchildren, Christopher (Monica) Weaver, Tyler (Melissa) Weaver, Kelly Spencer, Alana Spencer, Nathan Parr, and Joel Parr; and 4 great-grandchildren. The last of his family’s generation, Dale was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia (Andy) Hupp, and brothers, Leonard, Cecil, and Ralph (Laura) Spencer.
In the interest of public health, a private family graveside service will be held at Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery where he will be interred beside his beloved wife. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Council of the Blind of Ohio, 3805 N. High St. #305, Columbus, OH 43214.
