Dorothy J. “Dottie” (McFarland) Kuba, 81, of Dennison, Ohio, passed away while surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 12, 2011 after a brief illness. Born August 29, 1929 in Dayton, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Charles B. and Lulu (Manter) McFarland.
Dottie grew up in Dayton where she was a graduate of Northridge High School in the class of 1947 before obtaining her R.N. degree from Christ Hospital’s School of Nursing in Cincinnati. On August 26, 1950, she married Dr. Robert J. Kuba with whom she enjoyed over fifty years of loving marriage until his passing on November 29, 2001. While Dottie continued to practice nursing, including for Grasslands Hospital in White Plains, New York in the early 50’s, as well as at her husband’s medical practice in Dennison beginning in 1955 and continuing until his death, her single greatest passion and purpose was caring for her husband and children. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her five children, Barbara E. Charles of Gahanna, Sally K. (James) Bonner of Dennison, Dr. Sue Anne (Donna Ninkovich) Kuba of Fresno, California, Bobby (Tina) Kuba of Dublin, and Donald (Tammy) Kuba of Alabama; nine grandchildren, Matt (Elizabeth) Charles, Dr. Jennifer Kuba, Hillary Bonner, Brittany Leonardi, Brittany Bonner, Donnie Kuba, Gloria (Jonathan) Inman, Morgan (Matt) Chojnacki, and Brandon Leonardi; and six great grandchildren, Mitchell, Cameron and Catherine Charles, Rhiannon and Ethan Campbell, and Michael Massey. She is also survived by her twin brother, Don (Mary) McFarland of Dayton; brother, Keith McFarland of Los Altos Hills, California; brothers-in-law, Dana Fogg of Tampa, Florida and Phil Norton of Dayton; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jeff Charles; a sister, Betty Norton; and a brother, Charles McFarland.
Dottie was a woman of boundless energy and enthusiasm who shared her time and talents selflessly with her community. She was a longtime Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, was especially devoted to her work with the Tuscarawas County Medical Society Auxiliary which provided nursing scholarships, and was honored with the Woman of the Year Award from the Twin City Chamber of Commerce. She was a former member of Roxford United Methodist Church and Uhrichsville First United Methodist Church where she had served for many years as a youth leader and Sunday School teacher. She also enjoyed the fellowship of a host of dear friends in the Quest Club and the Supper Club which she and her husband enjoyed with a number of area couples. All who knew her will remember Dottie as a friend who gave freely of her time and always had time to listen to anyone who needed to talk, inspiring many into health care professions. She was an avid fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes and was happiest when she was fishing, gardening and spending time outdoors with her beloved family and friends. The family cabin at Tappan Lake was her “paradise on earth”.
Services for Dottie, officiated by Rev. John W. Clark, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16, in Uhrichsville First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow beside her husband in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday. As Dottie always felt that she had received so many beautiful flowers to enjoy throughout her life, she would wish that memorial contributions be made to the Claymont Foundation and the Tappan Volunteer Fire Department, in lieu of flowers.
