Dorothy M. “Cookie” Goodwin, 65, of New Philadelphia, O., passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Union Hospital in Dover, O., following a lengthy period of health issues.
Born July 31, 1943 in Uhrichsville, O., she was a daughter of the late Chalmers Edgar and Anna Ellen (Beamer) Smith.
Cookie grew up in the Twin City area and was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School in the class of 1961. While she was in high school, she had worked at the Riverside Roller Rink where she met the love of her life, Richard L. Goodwin, to whom she was married on August 2, 1963.
After living in California for twenty-two years, Cookie moved back to the area of her youth in 2001 and has been a resident of New Philadelphia since. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she had also worked in the health care field for a number of years. She was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians who enjoyed crocheting and watching television.
She is survived by her husband of over forty-six years, Richard; three sons, Richard L. Goodwin, Jr. and his wife, Julie A., of Uhrichsville, Shawn T.C. Goodwin and his wife, Terri L., of Elk Grove, Ca., and Terry L. Goodwin of Merced, Ca.; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Michelle) Schmidt of Placerville, Ca.; and six grandchildren, Zachary, Casey and Bradley Schmidt, Chelsie and Larissa Goodwin, and Terra Wagner, who were her greatest joy and treasure.
Cookie also leaves behind three sisters, Mrs. Redell (Penny) Brindley of Uhrichsville, Mrs. Ed (Anna) Napier of Dennison and Charlene Johnson of Uhrichsville, as well as many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Tina Goodwin, and a sister, Diana Weber.
Services for Cookie, officiated by Pastor Florence McNutt, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow at a later date with her mother in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Kidney Foundation.
