Doris Benedetto, 82, of 1019 N. Main St., Uhrichsville, died June 22, 2012 in Aultman Hospital at Canton after a short illness. She was born Feb. 11, 1930 at Dover, a daughter of Rudolph and Cora Schupbach and graduated from Dover High School in 1948.
She was married Aug. 20, 1949 to George Benedetto, whom she met at the old Spanish Ballroom at Dover. The couple liked to tell others that they met at a dance and had been dancing ever since. George died on July 13, 2010. The couple served as host and hostess of the Tuscarawas County Italian Festival in 1999. Well-known for their dancing, strangers commented on how they loved to watch them on the dance floor.
Doris created what she called her “Swiss Garden” which drew many people, friends and strangers alike, to her backyard that featured flowers of all types and varieties. Gifted with a “green thumb,” she particularly enjoyed planting and caring for her flowers. Extremely active, Doris belonged to numerous clubs including the Claymont Library’s book club, and card clubs including Tripoly. She was a former member of the Twin City Women’s Civic League.
She had been employed at the former F.W. Woolworth Co., Maurer’s Market, the A&P and retired as assistant manager of Rite Aid at Uhrichsville. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and its Altar Society. In addition, she currently volunteered at the Uhrichsville Clay Museum and the Food Pantry at Uhrichsville. She also enjoyed painting, ceramics and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Bertha Peters, Rose Ziesmer and Edna Weigand; and a brother, Paul Schupbach. Surviving are a son, Marc (Mary) Benedetto of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Luann Benedetto of Canton; grandchildren, Eddie Paul Benedetto of Canton, Jessica Lupi and companion, Cody Halter, of Uhrichsville, and Vinny and Thomas Benedetto of Omaha; a sister, Alma Bair of Dover; a sister-in-law, Josephine Benedetto of Dennison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Doris’ wishes, her body has been donated to Ohio University for anatomical study. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 30, at 11:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison with Fr. Anthony Lonzo officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Church.
