Donald E. “Moot” Moody, 72, of Dennison, O., passed away at his home while surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 10, 2009, following a lengthy illness.
Born November 23, 1936 in Dennison, he was a son of the late Samuel Ralph and Mildred Pauline (Hilliard) Moody. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Pat Moody.
Moot was a resident of Dennison for much of his life, having been a graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1954 before serving his country in the U.S. Navy. Upon his return from the service, he attended and was a member of the first graduating class of the Twin City Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in 1960. He later furthered his education at the Aultman Hospital School of Radiation Therapy Technology, graduating in 1972.
Moot worked as a radiation and radiology therapist at a number of area hospitals, including Twin City Hospital, Union Hospital, Akron General Medical Center and Massillon Radiation Center. Beginning in 1974, his career took a new direction as he began his work as a teacher of the skills that he had honed over the years. Moot dedicated his life to teaching and training his students in his chosen field and earned their love and dedication in the process. In 2003, he retired from 21st Century Oncology in Ft. Myers, Fla. where he had resided for nearly twenty years.
Moot was a tireless advocate for radiation and radiology therapy and its students, having served on countless boards, committees and consortiums. In addition to his regular teaching duties, he was also a guest lecturer for many medical conferences and had published a number of academic papers.
Locally, he had served as a former member of the Claymont Board of Education for a number of years. In his spare time, he enjoyed painting as an artistic expression and recently had one of his works chosen as the cover of a brochure for Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
His surviving family includes two sons, Donn Moody of Dover and Scott Moody and his wife, Donna, of Dennison; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Susan) Harris of Dennison, with whom he had resided, and Michele McDaniel Moody of Dennison; grandchildren, Maegan and Dia Czatt, Ryan Moody, Danielle Fellers, Riley and Emmalee McDaniel, and Melinda Zurcher; and great grandchildren, Blake Bridgeman, Abbey Lane Devore, and Haylee and Zane Bower.
Moot is also survived by a brother, Samuel Moody and his wife, Vera, of Florida; a sister, Mrs. Bill (Janet) Johnson of Tuscarawas; and several nieces and nephews.
His family would also to like to mention that Moot would want to acknowledge the wonderful care that Hospice of Tuscarawas County provided to him throughout his terminal illness. He was, and they are, especially grateful to Kerrie, Lynn and Tammy who always went above and beyond all expectations.
Services for Moot, officiated by Rev. Bob James, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will be in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
