Donald L. Mccune

Donald L. McCune, 79, of Schoenbrunn, was called home to Heaven from Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia on Saturday, August 2, 2014, after a short illness. Born June 10, 1935 in Columbus, he was a son of the late Russell Lee McCune and Lorene (Buchanan) McCune Gilmore. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Nelson Gilmore; brother, Jack R. McCune; and son-in-law, Barry Jenkins.

Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1950s. He began his long career in construction as a journeyman carpenter, and later specialized in drywall, owning his own business for many years. Later in life, he was employed by Union Hospital for 17 years, finally retiring in 2007. He was a devoted volunteer for the Salvation Army in his spare time. Don faithfully attended and was very active in Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville where he will be remembered for his wonderful Men’s Breakfasts.

On April 12, 1980, Don married the former Barbara June Romig with whom he enjoyed nearly 35 years of marriage. He is also survived by children: Bonnie (Marvin) Croy of New Philadelphia, Rhonda Jenkins and Scott (Kelly) McCune of Dover, Lynette (Larry) Kopp of Midvale, and Julie (Scott) Kerns and Alan Sours of Tuscarawas; grandchildren: Kyle, Tyler, Brittany, Tara, Justin, Trevor, Joey, Kenadi, Kami, and Brynli; great-grandchildren: Brylie, Braylen, and Aaden; sister: Joann (William) Johnson of Dennison; several nieces and nephews, including Bill Johnson to whom he was especially close; and many dear friends at Grace U.M.C.

Pastors Larry Malterer, Bill Johnson and Wanda Romig will officiate a funeral service on Thursday, August 7, at 1:00 p.m. in R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Community Hospice and the Twin City Christian Service Center Food Pantry.
