Donald Eugene “Gene” Reichman, 82, of Uhrichsville, O., passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Aultman Hospital in Canton, O., following a brief illness.
Born October 22, 1926 in Tuscarawas, O., he was a son of the late Dennis H. and Edna M. (Eichel) Reichman. Gene was the last surviving member of his family’s generation, having been preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd, Ralph, Vernon, Roy and Dennis Jr. Reichman, and four sisters, Helen Kristianson, Ruth Cochran, Mary McCahill and Ethel Reichman.
Gene was a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County except for the years when he served his country overseas in the Army at the close of World War II. Upon returning home, he continued to support his fellow servicemen as a member of Dover V.F.W. where he had been a past commander and a life member of Tuscarawas V.F.W.
In 1991, Gene retired from Costain Coal where he had worked for a number of years as a certified electrician. He was also a co-owner and operator of Empire Coal Company.
Gene was loving grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially supporting them in various sporting events. The last several years, he drew much joy from his great grandchildren and the outings they took together.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey D. (Diggs) Reichman, in 1979. They are survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Gilda) Enos with whom he had resided and Audrey Jean “Jeannie” Albright of Akron; nine grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Veronica M. “Vera” (Walsh) Reichman, who died in 2006.
His other surviving family includes a stepdaughter, Martha V. Doane of Uhrichsville, and a stepson, John Andrew Carpenter of Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services for Gene, officiated by Father Martin J. Ralko, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Dennison with a military committal service.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Those wishing to honor Gene’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the World War II Memorial Fund and the Twin City Hospital Foundation.
