Delbert Eugene Smitley, 77, of Freeport, died Thursday, December 25, 2014 at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia after a brief illness. Born July 17, 1937 in Dover, he was a son of the late Mose and Gladys (Hines) Smitley. Delbert was a lifelong resident of the area who had been employed at Superior Clay for many years. In his spare time, he took great pride in caring for his yard.
On October 1, 1960, Delbert married the former Nancy I. Streeter with whom he enjoyed 34 years of marriage until her passing on April 15, 1994. They are survived by five children: Tony Smitley of Dover, Tammy (Bill) Smitley-Engstrom of Lenoir, North Carolina, Todd and Thomas (Lori) Smitley of the home, and Slonia Page of Coshocton; grandchildren: Christopher Smitley, Helen Engstrom, William Engstrom Jr., Nathan Smitley, and Shaka and Jesse Page; and great-grandchildren: Dalton Ball, Payton Ball, Savanna Engstrom and Sabrina Engstrom. Delbert is also survived by his sister, Sandy Tidrick, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Travis and Terry Lee Smitley.
In keeping with Delbert’s wishes, he will be buried with his beloved wife in Feed Spring Cemetery near Uhrichsville without a public visitation or service.
