Cumi T. Harris

Cumi T. Harris, 97, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024 at Claymont Health and Rehabilitation in Uhrichsville. Born June 16, 1926 in Luverne, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Annie Ruth (Davis) Lowery.

Cumi spent much of her life as a resident of Uhrichsville where she had been a member of St. John AME Church.  On occasion, she would drive to Youngstown, Ohio to attend the services of the late Evangelist Kathryn Kuhlman.  She graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from Canton Mercy Hospital nursing school. After graduation, she was employed by the hospital and served as a nurse for 23 years until her retirement. Her favorite pastimes were working in the garden, knitting, and cooking.  While attending St. John AME Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and program director for the youth for many years.  In addition, she provided food and homemade clothes for needy people in the area. She also was a mentor for foreign students studying in USA.

On September 25, 1944, Cumi married Joseph Spencer Harris by whom she was widowed after 56 years of marriage when he died on October 12, 2000. She is survived by her sisters, Katie Gamble, Minnie Washington, and Ann Lightfoot, and many nieces and nephews, including Sandra Kay Jackson, Shelia Ann Jackson, and Dr. J. David Jackson, as well as a large extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Abraham Lowery and sister, Ruth Marie Jackson.

Services, officiated by Pastor Archie Jackson, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, at the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Her family will receive callers at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the funeral. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Charitable contributions honoring Cumi’s memory may be made to Twin City Christian Service Center’s Food Pantry.
