Clarence R. Sowards, 85, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia, Ohio, after a lengthy illness. Born July 1, 1926 in New Lexington, Ohio, he was a son of the late John Franklin and Lavinia May (Kennison) Sowers.

An Army veteran of World War II, Clarence was a resident of Uhrichsville since 1949. He worked for a number of area businesses, including thirty-eight years at Larson Clay, then as a custodian for Indian Valley South Schools and Dennison Church of God, and most recently for Buckeye Security. He was a member of the Handicap Society of Tuscarawas County for whom he had served as a trustee, the Independent Living Center, Buckeye Country Music Association, and the Tuscora C.B. Club. He was also a past member of the Twin City American Legion Post, V.F.W. Columbus Post and the Columbus Eagles. He was an avid fisherman until his health prevented him. He was a longtime member of the Dennison Church of God.

On June 25, 1950, Clarence married the former Thelma Virginia Wilkins with whom he enjoyed nearly fifty years of marriage until her passing on April 26, 1999. They are survived by a son, Philip; a daughter, Phyllis; and grandsons, Charles and Derick. Clarence is also survived by his dear friends and neighbors, Estella Salina and Fred Brady. He was truly grateful for the many people who helped care for him during his extended illness, including the aides from Better Home Health, and especially the staff of Community Hospice.

Services for Clarence, officiated by Pastor Brian Flood, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 8, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside his beloved wife in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery with a military committal service. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Those wishing to honor Clarence’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
