Charles J. Riley

Charles J. Riley, 83, of Uhrichsville, O., died Monday, March 1, 2010 at his daughter’s home after a short illness.

Born near Bowerston, O. on June 14, 1926, he was a son of the late Charles Elmer “Chuck” and Mildred (Freeman) Riley.

Charles was lifelong resident of the area who had worked in the local coal industry for many years until his retirement from Midvale Coal in the late 70’s. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the former Uhrichsville Lighthouse. He enjoyed farming and remodeling homes, and he loved to fish and travel in his spare time.

On October 28, 1944, Charles married Betty Louise (Hague) Riley with whom he enjoyed nearly fifty-nine years of marriage until her passing on July 10, 2003. They are survived by a daughter, Karen Faith McDaniel and her companion, Spencer Ladrich, with whom he had resided; two granddaughters: Tresa Ann Berndt and her husband, Joe, of Dennison and Heidi Lynn Baughman and her husband Specialist Christopher, currently stationed Ft. Campbell, Ky.; a grandson, Daniel Riley of Florida; and three great grandchildren: Joey, Stevie, and Mathew Berndt of Dennison. Charles was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who especially enjoyed the time that he spent with his three great grandsons.

Charles is also survived by a sister, Shelva Mitchell and her husband, Don, of Uhrichsville; three brothers: Ernie Riley and his wife, Lorie, of Uhrichsville, Gerald Riley and his wife, Carolyn, of Uhrichsville, and John Riley and his wife, Alice, of Dennison; a sister-in-law, Frieda Riley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Leta Riley; two sons, Danny and Rocky Riley; a brother, Glenn Riley; and a sister and brother-in-law, Artie Jane and Ted Caldwell.

Services for Charles, officiated by Pastor Bill Thompson, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Tunnel Hill Cemetery near Bowerston.

Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Those wishing to honor Charles’ memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
