Betty Marie Smith, 87, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away at her home on August 2, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Born November 2, 1923 in Uhrichsville, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Benjamin and Edith Marie (Warner) Alwood.

A 1942 graduate of Uhrichsville High School, Betty made Uhrichsville her home for her entire life where she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She devoted her life to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker after working at Postle’s Grocery for a time in her younger years. She had also been a volunteer at the Dennison Depot Canteen during World War II. In her spare time, she loved playing cards and following the Cleveland Indians.

On August 30, 1947, Betty married Donald R. Smith who survives her at their home. She is also survived by two daughters, Peggy Bernard of Steubenville and Cathy Clymer and her husband, Michael, of Uhrichsville; three grandchildren, Carrie Dobbs of North Carolina, Jeffery Bernard of Steubenville, and Christian Clymer and his wife, Kelly, of Dundee; and eight great grandchildren, Kayla and Jimbo McDowell, Harmony, Corbin and Ryan Clymer, and Ryan, Jacob and Kelsey Bernard. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Alwood.

Services for Betty, officiated by Rev. Larry Malterer and Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will be in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Those wishing to honor Betty’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association.
