Betty Grace Long

Betty Grace Long, 84, of Uhrichsville, O., passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Arbors of Marietta in Marietta, O., following a period of declining health.

Born June 8, 1924 in Uhrichsville, she was a daughter of the late Alonzo Ralph and Rosa Claire (Gibbs) Wagstaff.

A resident of the Twin City area for most of her life, Betty was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School in the class of 1942. She was an active member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church where she had been the organist for many years, as well as serving as the choir musician. Betty enjoyed cooking for the festivals and donating dinners for the church. She was an avid bowler, as well.

On May 28, 1949, she married Herbert Dean Long, Sr. with whom she enjoyed over fifty-eight years of marriage until his passing on December 8, 2007. They are survived by a daughter, Susan Van Why Schoonover and her husband, Dan, of Belpre, O.; a son, Herbert D. Long, Jr. and his wife, Margaret “Peggy”, of West Allis, Wisc.; five grandchildren, Kellie Waite and her husband, Jason, of Stockport, O., Kimm Jackson and her husband, Kenny, also of Stockport, and Lisa, Lindsey and Adam Long, all of Wisconsin; and six great grandchildren, Chris, Casey, Andee, Kaley, Austin, and Jaydyn.

Betty is also survived by her sister, Pearl Marsh of Dennison, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Bundy.

Betty was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved caring for her family. She had also worked for a number of area businesses, including Timken, A&P Grocery, Gooding’s Bakery and Gooding’s IGA Grocery, and The Evening Chronicle.

Services for Betty will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
