Betty Jean Carpenter, 66, of Newcomerstown, O., passed away on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Union Hospital in Dover, O., after a brief illness.
Born August 15, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Charles Albert and Jessie Leona (White) Hart.
A resident of the Port Washington area for most of her life, Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who had also worked at the Scio Pottery for many years until its closing. She later worked as a home health care aide for a number of area families, as well as for Tastee Apple for a short time.
On February 25, 1960, Betty married Clayton James Carpenter with whom she recently celebrated forty-nine years of marriage. She is also survived by four children, Clayton J. “Joe” Carpenter, Jr. and his companion, Linda Bradford, of West Lafayette, Cathy Carpenter and her companion, Jake Sugget, of Newcomerstown, Mark Carpenter of West Lafayette, and Beth Felgenhauer and her husband, Paul, of New Philadelphia; seven grandchildren, Nile, Lance, Desmond, Tanesha, Brandy, Kierston, and Lucas; a great grandchild, Darrin; two sisters, Pauline Wilson and her husband, Tom, of Coshocton and Mary Carpenter of Dennison; three brothers, Paul Hart and his wife, Faith, of Uhrichsville, James Hart of Newcomerstown, and David Hart of Uhrichsville; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece who was also a dear friend, Debbie Miller; and a close friend, Pauline Groff and her husband, Howard, of Newcomerstown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Charles and Richard Hart; four sisters, Margaret “Maggie” Orr, and Annie E., Nettie Frances and Theresa Hart; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Carpenter.
Betty was a caring woman who would do anything for her family and friends. She especially loved the time that she spent with her grandchildren and was an avid bingo player.
Services for Betty, officiated by Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held on Wednesday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in Port Washington Salem Union Cemetery in Port Washington.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Those wishing to honor Betty’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice.
