Benjamin C. Brady, 81, of Gnadenhutten, O., passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Canton, O., following a period of declining health.

Born in New Philadelphia, O. on November 19, 1927, he was a son of the late Russell William and Helen Pearl (Handrich) Brady.

A resident of Gnadenhutten for over fifty years, Ben retired from Alsco and had also been the owner and proprietor of the Union 76 Station and Laundromat in Gnadenhutten. He was a longtime member of Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church.

After graduating from Uhrichsville High School in 1945, Ben served his country in the Air Force at the close of World War II. He was a member of F. & A.M. Lodge #202 which serves Port Washington and Gnadenhutten, and a life member of the Uhrichsville Eagles. Throughout his life, Ben was an avid sports enthusiast from his high school years when he played football and baseball for Uhrichsville, to the many years when he played baseball with the Edgefield Tavern teams, to his later years when he enjoyed many happy hours watching his favorite teams play on televison.

Ben was a devoted and loving husband to Lois Arlene (Waltz) Brady to whom he was married on June 1, 1946. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Daniel A. Brady of Pass Christian, Miss.; a daughter, Mrs. John (Linda) Capes of Uhrichsville; six grandchildren, Daniel A. Brady, Jr. and his wife, Billie, of St. Stephens, S.C., Mrs. Tucker (Arlene) Watkins of Henderson, N.C., Mrs. Scott (Cristin) Beitzel of Uhrichsville, Mrs. Scott (Carrie) Duncan of East Sparta, O., and Shannon Snowden and Joseph P. Brady of Meridian, Miss.; and five great grandchildren, Dylan Thomas and Madison McKibben of Uhrichsville, Jacob Allen Duncan of East Sparta, and Acea Ange, Stephanie Snowden and Jazmin Brady of Meridian, Miss. with two more great grandchildren expected.

Ben is also survived by a brother- and sister-in-law, Michael and Polly Bricker of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two aunts, Mrs. Ray (Pauline) Detchen of Alliance, O. and Mrs. Grace Oakleaf of Navarre, O.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services for Ben, officiated by Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in Gnadenhutten’s Clay-Union Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, during which time, a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Immediately following the cemetery services, a gathering of family and friends for a time of fellowship and remembrance will be held at the home of Ben’s daughter, Linda. Those wishing to honor Ben’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Heart Association.
