Antoinette Jean Marie Szymialis

Aug 11, 1955 — Jul 1, 2026

Longs, South Carolina

Antoinette Jean Marie Szymialis, lovingly known as “Toni” by her family and friends, passed away suddenly at the age of 70 on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Summa Health System’s Akron Campus. Born August 11, 1955 in Dover, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Alfred James and Alice Marie (née Zanotelli) Szymialis.

After her 1973 graduation from Indian Valley North High School, Toni proudly served her country in the U.S. Army. Following her time in the military, she returned home to Tuscarawas County and made her home in Barnhill. Until her retirement in 2017, she had worked for Zimmer Surgical in Dover. The following year, she moved to Naples, Florida before eventually settling in Longs, South Carolina where she has made her home since 2024.

Toni had many interests including crafting and decorating. She also loved shopping – especially thrifting. When she had time to relax, she had loads of fun singing karaoke and playing dominoes, as well as a variety of games of chance. Most of all, she loved spending time in the company of her family, all of whom she loved dearly.

Toni will be deeply missed by her daughter, Alyson (Shane) Shanower; grandchildren, Anthony Everhart, Logan Everhart, and Evan Shanower; siblings, Kathryn Oberholzer, John (Janice) Szymialis, Mary Anne (Rick) Baker, and Chris Szymialis; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former spouse, Wayne Carpenter, and her brothers-in-law, Michael “Obie” Oberholzer and Gregory “Moose” Morris.

According to Toni’s wishes, she will be cremated without a prior visitation. Her family will celebrate her life privately on a future date. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions honoring her memory may be made to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, 1432 Tall Timber Rd. N.E., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
