Alwood "Butch" Gray

October 10, 1943 — February 12, 2009

Alwood P. “Butch” Gray, 65, of Uhrichsville, O., passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison, O.

Born October 10, 1943 in Dennison, he was a son of the late Walter Eugene and Bessie (Setvin) Gray.

Butch spent his childhood in the Twin City area before his family moved to Missouri where he was a graduate of Mountain View High School. He was an outstanding athlete, having been named to the All-Missouri Football squad when he was in high school and later playing on the Uhrichsville Vikings semi-pro football team. Butch also loved swimming, diving, skiing, skating and many other athletic activities which he pursued with a fearless, all or nothing attitude.

After spending many years living in Missouri and Arizona where he had been employed by Roto Rooter for a number of years, Butch returned to our area nearly twenty years ago. He was a self-employed carpenter who also had worked with his brother for some time. Locally, Butch was a member of the Uhrichsville Eagles and he loved spending time with his friends there. He was a generous, giving man who was happiest when he could do something to help a friend.

His surviving family includes two sons, Troy and Justin Gray of Tucson, Arizona; a daughter, Anita Gray of Humboldt, Kansas; five grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria M. Wigert of Uhrichsville and Mrs. Herb (Veda Maxine) Bower of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother, Minnard B. Gray of Uhrichsville; a number of nieces and nephews; and his former spouse, Mary Ann Ruscin.

In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter W. Gray, Jr. and Robert Lee Gray.

In keeping with Butch’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation. A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Michael C. Travis, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, in the Uhrichsville Eagles Lodge. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions to honor Butch’s memory may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
