Alvin R. Arthurs

Alvin Ray Arthurs, 93, of Uhrichsville passed away at home on Thursday October 25, 2018. Born July 3, 1925 he was the son of the late William and Elma (Ray) Arthurs. Al graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1943.

Alvin was inducted into the Army on September 3, 1943. He fought in North France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and Normandy as a mortar gunner in the 3 ^rd Armored Division. He enlisted in the Air Force on November 17, 1945.

On January 17, 1946, Alvin married Betty Schwab. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage until her passing in 2014. Al and Betty were blessed with 4 children, Robert, deceased (Brenda) Arthurs, Jeffrey (Diane) Arthurs, Ann (David) Marino, and Sue (Gary) DeMattio.

Known as “Papa Al” he dearly loved his 11 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.

He is survived by a sister, Emily (Herb) Crites and sister-in-law, Carole Arthurs. He was preceded in death by sisters, Sue (Bob) Morgan, Peg (Jim) Fette; brother, Jim Arthurs; brother-in-law, Robert (Marguerite) Schwab; sisters-in-law, Alma (Chuck) Smith, Peggy (Bill) Weaver, and Lois (Doyle) Kinsey; and a great grandchild, Christian.

Alvin was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had worked at Clay City Pipe and Metropolitan Life Insurance and retired from Dover Cryogenics (AMCO). Alvin was the first president of Claymont High School Booster Club from 1965-1966.

Services for Al, officiated by Pastor Larry Malterer, will be held at 11am on Tuesday, October 30, at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow with a military committal service in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery beside his beloved wife. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7pm at the funeral home. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville.
